Updates and Announcements for April 2023

Dear friends,

We have so much news to share with you!

Here are the details and deadlines:

  1. April 1: This Saturday, April 1, at 3:00 p.m., wear your Croatian jerseys and caps and cheer on the Vancouver Croatia Soccer Club as they take on the Gorge Football Club in Victoria at Hampton Park Turf, 225 Hampton Road.

  2. Deadline April 1: Will you be in Croatia from July 24–29? Then consider signing up for the Croatian World Games. The application deadline is April 1. Here is the link for more info: www.hsi-cwg.com/prijave or contact hsi@hsk.hr. The competition is free, and accommodation is free for all ages 16 and up. The competitions are arranged by age group. Games include soccer, basketball, pickleball, table tennis, bocce ball, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball, badminton, karate, judo, and others. Check out the link!

  3. April 15: Please save your empty bottles and deliver them to the St. Leopold Mandić Croatian Church parking lot on Saturday, April 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. All proceeds support travel expenses for our folklore group “Zagreb” to attend the Croatian Canadian Folklore Federation West Festival in Edmonton in May. Your generous support is appreciated.

  4. April 23: Fundraising lunch on Sunday, April 23 at 12:30 pm. The proceeds will go toward funding our kolo group’s travel expenses to Edmonton. Lunch tickets are $25 (adults), $15 (youth 10-17), and $5 (children under 10). Reserve your tickets at info@ccsv.ca or any CCSV council member or kolo group parent.

  5. April 28: CCSV is hosting a “consular day” in Victoria at the church hall on Friday, April 28. To schedule a consular appointment, please contact the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa by e-mail at con.ottawa@mvep.hr. Appointments will be taken until April 18 on a first come, first served basis. Only the clients with scheduled appointments and well-prepared documents will be received by the Consul. Visit our Facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/ccsv.ca/

In addition to the above, the CCSV council met for half a day on Saturday, March 25 to plan CCSV’s future over the next few years. We are so excited to share with you some of our upcoming events:

  1. CROfest. We plan to bring CROfest back next year.

  2. Paint Night. We are currently working on plans for a paint night. We had so much fun at the one we had in 2020 and hope to recreate and reenergize our community again with art.

  3. Pickleball Club. If pickleball is good enough for the Croatian World Games, it’s good enough for CCSV. Our avid pickleball promoter, Mirijana Juras, will work on forming CCSV’s first pickleball club.

  4. Pub night(s). Stay tuned for more info on this gathering for all ages.

  5. Social media. We are working on expanding our social media reach through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ccsv.ca/, Twitter @ccsv16, and Instagram @ccsv.ca. Also, check out our website: https://ccsv.ca/. A Whatsapp group is also in the plan.

  6. Kolo group. We plan on organizing kolo groups just for fun for those that want to gather and dance without commitments to travel to festivals. Why not?

  7. Cultural gatherings. Another fun and interactive group, including gastronomy, to learn more about Croatian culture.

  8. Seniors’ social and crafts club. This club will surely resonate with our older generation, but we hope to entice the younger generation to learn some Croatian traditions.

Other plans include forming a welcome group, walking/hiking group, education/language promotion, cooking lessons, and more. We are very excited about what we can and will do to reunite and re-engage our community’s members.

All for now . . . we look forward to seeing you at our next fundraisers – bottle drive on April 15 and superb lunch on April 23.

PS: Do you know someone in our community who is not on email or social media? Print a copy of this newsletter and take it to them. Let’s keep as many people in the communication loop as possible. Thank you for spreading the word through print, email, and social media.

PPS: Would you like to assist with any upcoming projects? Please connect with us at info@ccsv.ca. We would love to hear from you!
